Calvin McDonald's New Role: CEO of The Wella Company (2026)

The Beauty Industry's Next Big Move: A New CEO for The Wella Company

In the midst of ongoing discussions about a potential Wella IPO, a significant executive appointment has been made. The beauty sector is abuzz with the news that Calvin McDonald, a seasoned industry leader, has been named the next CEO of The Wella Company, effective April 2nd. But here's where it gets intriguing: McDonald's appointment comes at a time when the company's parent, investment firm KKR, is reportedly preparing to take Wella public.

McDonald, a three-time CEO, brings a wealth of experience from leading global consumer brands and retail businesses. His track record includes building Lululemon Athletica into an industry powerhouse during his seven-year tenure, followed by a successful stint as CEO of Sephora North America, where he navigated the beauty industry through its digital revolution. Prior to that, he served as president and CEO of Sears Canada.

Glenn Murphy, who has been guiding the company during the interim period, will continue as executive chair. Murphy praised McDonald's ability to drive results through product differentiation and category expansion, highlighting his expertise as a key asset for Wella's future success in the dynamic beauty sector.

Wella, a portfolio of renowned brands including Wella, Briogeo, OPI, Clairol, and GHD, is poised for growth under McDonald's leadership. Nancy Ford, a partner at KKR, expressed confidence in McDonald's ability to build upon Wella's existing foundation and propel the company forward.

McDonald's career journey began at Loblaw Cos. Ltd., Canada's largest food retailer, where he spent 18 years climbing the ranks. He is excited to return to the beauty industry, describing it as an innovative and consumer-driven sector. McDonald is eager to leverage his experience to elevate Wella's iconic brands, collaborate with the professionals behind them, and explore new ways to engage consumers.

According to a recent Reuters report, KKR is actively preparing Wella for an IPO in the U.S., potentially as early as this year. This move is expected to significantly increase the company's valuation beyond the $4.3 billion KKR initially invested. However, a KKR spokesperson declined to comment when contacted last week.

As previously reported, in December 2025, Coty Inc. divested its remaining 25.8% stake in the hair care giant to KKR. Wella Company's performance is reflected in the WWD Beauty Inc Top 100, where it ranked 21st in the 2024 edition, with estimated sales of $2.26 billion, a 3.3% increase from 2023.

And this is the part most people miss: The appointment of McDonald as CEO could be a strategic move by KKR to position Wella for a successful IPO. With his extensive experience and track record of success, McDonald is well-equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with taking a company public. It will be interesting to see how his leadership impacts Wella's growth and valuation in the coming months. What do you think? Is this a smart move by KKR, or are there potential challenges ahead?
