Can the Los Angeles Rams defy the odds and seize Super Bowl glory in 2025? It's a question that's got fans buzzing, especially considering their stellar performance this season. The Rams, undeniably one of the NFC's top contenders, have showcased their offensive prowess, finishing the regular season with the league's top-scoring offense, spearheaded by the dynamic duo of Matthew Stafford and Puka Nacua, who led the NFL in passing yards, touchdowns, and receptions.
With a commendable 12-5 record, securing the No. 2 spot in the NFC West, the Rams are set to kick off their playoff journey in the wild-card round against the Carolina Panthers. Early predictions favor the Rams, but history casts a long shadow over their Super Bowl aspirations.
Here's where it gets interesting: the Rams face a significant historical hurdle. Since 1970, according to CBS Sports' John Breech, 15 teams have entered the postseason with at least 11 wins, while also having two divisional rivals with an equal or greater number of wins. The Rams find themselves in this exact scenario. But here's the kicker: none of the previous 12 teams in this situation have gone on to win the Super Bowl. This historical trend also includes their divisional rivals, the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers.
This isn't ancient history either. This situation has recently unfolded, in both the 2020 and 2024 playoffs.
In 2024, the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Green Bay Packers all stumbled, going 0-3 in the postseason, even with the Lions securing the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye. Similarly, in 2020, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens faltered in the AFC playoffs, with the Browns defeating the Steelers but ultimately losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Ravens falling to the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round.
The sole exception to this trend was the 1985 New England Patriots. They went 11-5, and defeated their AFC East rival, the Miami Dolphins, in the conference title game. However, they, too, fell short, losing to the legendary '85 Bears in the Super Bowl.
The Rams have a mountain to climb, but it's not impossible. Their path to the Super Bowl will be challenging, beginning with the Panthers. A victory there could set up a clash with the Seahawks in Seattle. And if they advance far enough, a showdown with the 49ers in the NFC Championship could be on the cards.
