"I Felt Numb, Couldn't Understand": RCB Player Opens Up About Heartbreaking T20 World Cup Exclusion
Jitesh Sharma's absence from the T20 World Cup 2026 has stirred quite a conversation in the cricket community. India, known for its rich reservoir of cricketing prowess, currently boasts only a handful of reliable finishers—players who can expertly seal matches in crucial moments. One such promising talent was Jitesh Sharma, the wicket-keeper batsman for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), whose inclusion in the national T20I team had raised hopes. However, when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup, Jitesh found himself unexpectedly left out. While he chose not to express his feelings on social media immediately, he later revealed that he had received no prior notice regarding his exclusion from the selectors.
During a candid interview with CricTracker, Jitesh shared that discovering his omission from the team was truly heartbreaking. It wasn't until Ajit Agarkar, the head of the selection committee, provided clarity on the squad changes that Jitesh began to grasp the situation. "I had no idea I was left out until the squad was made public. Once it was announced, I listened to the explanation given by the selectors at the press conference and found their reasoning valid. After discussing further with the coaches and selectors, I felt their rationale was sound, and I came to understand their perspective," he explained.
Interestingly, alongside Jitesh, the selection committee also decided to exclude Shubman Gill, the team's Test and ODI captain, while bringing back players like Rinku Singh and Ishan Kishan. In an effort to cope with his disappointment, Jitesh reached out to former Indian star Dinesh Karthik, seeking guidance to help him move forward.
"It was devastating because I had put in so much effort to be part of the ICC T20 World Cup team. But sometimes, fate has other plans, and I cannot deny that. At that moment, I felt completely numb and unable to process the news. Spending time with my family and conversing with Dinesh Karthik played a significant role in helping me overcome those feelings," Jitesh revealed.
Despite this setback, Jitesh's journey isn't over. However, the selectors' decision to opt for an opening batsman in the wicket-keeper role does complicate his prospects moving forward.
