A devastating loss for a town's heritage: The closure of the Museum of Carpet in Kidderminster has left a local artist, Charlotte Blazier, feeling heartbroken. This museum, a testament to a once-booming industry, has now become a casualty of financial struggles.
Charlotte, a textiles artist, found immense value in volunteering at the museum. She believes the history of the town is being forgotten, and the current residents are unaware of its rich past.
"People might wonder why someone my age would care about a museum or carpets. But the heritage of Kidderminster is slipping away, and that's a tragedy," she explained.
Kidderminster, once renowned worldwide for its carpets, has seen many of its iconic buildings demolished. "The heritage is disappearing, and it's truly sad," Ms. Blazier added.
The museum, unique as the only carpet museum in the UK, housed two Victorian handlooms. One produced the versatile 'Kidderminster Stuff' fabric, used for floor coverings, while the other crafted the original Kidderminster carpet.
Ms. Blazier, who has worked with these machines, shared, "Looms like these were once common in homes, especially cottages. Families would work together, and it was like a cottage industry. They'd make the cloth, the material, and the carpet, and then get paid for their piecework."
Kidderminster has a long history of carpet and textile production, dating back to the Domesday Book. "We have canals, sheep in the area, and the River Severn, where they'd wash the wool before spinning it. It was often the women and children who spun the yarns, ready for the loom."
She emphasized, "A lot of people don't realize the craftsmanship and skill involved. It's important to remember and see for yourself how these carpets were made."
The trust running the museum announced its permanent closure last month. It had operated for 13 years, housing an extensive collection of objects, archives, books, and photographs.
