In a stunning turn of events, the final run of US pennies has fetched a staggering $16.7 million at auction! It's a testament to the enduring appeal of these tiny coins, which have been a part of American life since 1793, according to the auctioneers.
On December 15, 2025, history was made when Stack’s Bowers Galleries in California hosted the auction of the last pennies ever minted. This wasn't just any sale; it was a celebration of the penny's legacy, with each set of coins representing a piece of American history.
The auction featured 232 sets, each containing three coins: a 2025 penny from the Philadelphia Mint, a 24-karat gold penny from the Philadelphia Mint, and a 2025-D penny from the Denver Mint. These coins were embossed with the omega symbol “Ω”, marking the end of the penny's production run.
Each set sold for an average of over $72,000, with the final set, number 232, going for an incredible $800,000! This particular set was special as it included the last circulating pennies from Philadelphia and Denver, along with the final gold omega penny.
Stack’s Bowers Galleries President, Brian Kendrella, expressed his honor at being selected to partner with the United States Mint for this historic event.
Kristie McNally, the Mint's acting director, shared her excitement about the auction, stating that it was a chance to celebrate the penny's 232-year history. She highlighted the significance of the event, emphasizing the opportunity to commemorate this moment in time.
But here's where it gets controversial... The production of pennies was halted in November due to the rising costs associated with their creation.
In February, former President Donald Trump even voiced his opinion on the matter via Truth Social, stating that the penny costs the US more than its actual value and instructing the Secretary of the Treasury to stop producing them.
And this is the part most people miss... The Mint's annual report to Congress revealed a loss of $85.3 million on penny production in the fiscal year 2024.
