Hip Hop Legend Lil Jon Grieves the Loss of His Son, Nathan Smith
The music industry mourns the tragic passing of Nathan Smith, the son of renowned rapper Lil Jon, who died at the age of 27. In a heartfelt statement to People Magazine, Lil Jon, whose real name is Jonathan Smith, shared the devastating news and paid tribute to his beloved son.
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of our son, Nathan Smith," Lil Jon, 55, said. "His mother, Nicole, and I are devastated beyond words. Nathan was a beacon of kindness, care, and warmth, and his impact on our lives will forever be cherished."
Lil Jon described Nathan as a compassionate and talented individual. "Nathan was the epitome of kindness and consideration. He was always polite, passionate, and full of warmth. He loved his family and friends with all his heart. As a music producer, artist, and engineer, he was an incredibly talented young man, and a graduate of NYU. We are incredibly proud of him."
The tragic circumstances surrounding Nathan's death began on February 3rd when he was reported missing after running barefoot out of his house without a phone. The search for Nathan, which involved the Cherokee County Fire Department divers, ended in tragedy as his body was found in a pond at Mayfield Park, near his home in Milton. The Milton County Police Department confirmed the recovery of the body earlier on the same day.
Despite the initial investigation revealing no signs of foul play, the Milton Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division continues to treat the case as an open and active investigation. Nathan, known as DJ Young Slade, had a small following on Soundcloud, and his last single, 'Feels,' was released in March 2025.
In a 2025 interview with The Quintissential Gentleman, Nathan expressed his gratitude for his father's support. "It's an honor to appreciate my dad and show respect for all he's achieved," he said. "Passing the torch and doing my own thing is a privilege. It's like it comes from him, but I'm making it my own."
