A tragic incident has unfolded, leaving an elderly man deceased after a fire at a North York retirement home. The story, as reported by Toronto police, is a stark reminder of the potential dangers within our communities.
The fire, which occurred on Finch Avenue West near Bathurst Street, started shortly before 10:30 p.m. on a Sunday evening. Toronto Fire Services responded swiftly, locating the blaze on the fourth floor of the retirement residence. One individual was rescued from a unit on that floor, but unfortunately, the elderly man, believed to be in his 80s, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries.
Acting Division Commander Robert Hewson provided further details, stating that 21 fire trucks were dispatched to the scene. The fire, which was confined to the living area of the unit, was quickly extinguished. Hewson emphasized that the smoke conditions inside the building were minimal, and thus, an evacuation was not necessary.
The cause and origin of the fire are currently under investigation by a Toronto Fire investigator. Additionally, the Office of the Fire Marshal will conduct their own inquiry into this deadly incident.
