Walk to Work Day 2024: Improve Your Mental Health and Raise Funds (2026)

Myall Coast locals are being encouraged to walk to work as part of a national mental health campaign. The Walk to Work Day initiative, taking place on Friday, March 26th, aims to promote the physical and mental health benefits of walking while also raising funds for the Black Dog Institute. This annual campaign, led by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, highlights the positive impact regular walking can have on mental wellbeing and overall health. The Black Dog Institute, a mental health research institute, estimates that mental illness costs businesses over $39 billion annually through lost productivity, absenteeism, and staff turnover. The campaign encourages individuals, workplace teams, and businesses to walk and fundraise together to support better mental health outcomes. The Pedestrian Council's CEO, Harold Scruby, emphasizes the natural fit between the campaign and the Black Dog Institute's mission. He states, 'We are thrilled to partner with Black Dog Institute. Given the benefits a simple walk can have on mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and stress, we hope this reminder will encourage Australia's working population to walk more, not just on Walk to Work Day but every day.' The Black Dog Institute's Fundraising Director, Laura Edwards, highlights the powerful role of physical activity in supporting mental health. She notes that exercise promotes positive changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and new activity patterns that support calm, focus, and overall wellbeing. Edwards suggests that workplaces can play a crucial role in creating mentally healthy environments by prioritizing wellbeing and supporting positive, sustainable habits. The Walk to Work Day initiative offers flexibility, allowing people to participate in ways that suit their routines, such as parking further from work, getting off public transport early, or walking during lunch breaks. The campaign encourages working Australians to form walking groups, introduce walking meetings or lunchtime walks, and set personal or team step challenges. By inviting colleagues, friends, and family to support their walks through donations, individuals can make a meaningful impact. Now in its 27th year, Walk to Work Day continues to promote the benefits of walking, extending beyond mental health to include physical health and overall wellbeing.
