West Virginia Central Credit Union's New Year Surprise: Owner Dividends for Members (2026)

A surprise gift for members of West Virginia Central Credit Union! On New Year's Day, the credit union made an unexpected move, depositing owner dividends into its members' accounts. But here's where it gets controversial...

The credit union's President and CEO, Michael Tucker, explained that after reviewing their capital ratios, they decided to return some funds to members, citing their low-risk profile. Tucker emphasized that since the members own the credit union, it was an easy decision to make.

Dividends based on loyalty, not balance. Unlike bonus dividends, this owner dividend was distributed based on the length of membership, not account balances. Members who joined before December 31st, 2024, received $48, while those who joined after received $12.50. Tucker clarified that every member is equal, and the dividend amounts were determined using a reasonable time period as the deciding factor.

The credit union distributed just over $993,000 to approximately 22,000 members from their allocated one million dollars.

Tax implications addressed. Tucker assured members that they will receive documentation from the credit union to help with tax reporting, as the dividend is considered taxable income.

The community response to these owner dividend deposits has been overwhelmingly positive. Members shared how the extra funds helped them start the new year on a high note, with one member using it to pay for their child's extracurricular activities.

Tucker highlighted the benefits of credit unions over for-profit banks, stating that credit unions can offer better financial deals to members without the pressure of considering stockholders. He also expressed the credit union's desire to make the owner dividend an annual tradition for its members, if possible.

So, what do you think? Is this a brilliant move by the credit union, or is there a catch? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
