Gen Z's relationship with work is a hot topic, and a recent survey has revealed some eye-opening insights. The generation born between 1997 and 2012, known for their digital prowess, is challenging traditional career paths.
Researchers from Gateway Commercial Finance delved into the minds of over 1,008 employees, including an equal mix of Gen Z individuals and hiring managers. The findings? A whopping 58% of interviewees view their jobs as 'situationships', a term describing a casual, short-term arrangement. But here's where it gets controversial: 47% of Gen Z respondents plan to leave their jobs within a year, and nearly half are ready to quit at any moment.
So, what's driving this trend? Well, Gen Z has a unique perspective on job benefits. Only 46% believe staying with one employer offers advantages, while 37% see their roles as mere paychecks. And this is the part most people miss: just 25% consider their current jobs as long-term opportunities worth investing in.
When it comes to leaving, money talks. Over half of Gen Z respondents cited higher salaries elsewhere as a reason to move on. Additionally, 34% reported poor mental health and burnout, and 22% felt undervalued at their current jobs.
However, hiring managers aren't taking this lightly. One in four considers short-term roles on a Gen Z resume a red flag, and over a third have admitted to passing on Gen Z candidates due to job-hopping.
Previous studies have explored Gen Z's career priorities, with a focus on financial well-being. Bank of America's study found that 72% of Gen Z took steps to improve their financial health, yet only 39% received family support, a decline from 46% in 2024. Holly O'Neill, President of Consumer, Retail, and Preferred Banking at Bank of America, stated, "Gen Z is challenging stereotypes about young people and finances. Despite economic barriers, they're striving for financial independence and control."
